AP Calculus
Summer Assignment

The purpose of the APC summer assignment is twofold:  1) It is to review the prerequisite skills necessary for success at the AP Calculus level, and 2) it is to demonstrate a willingness on the part of the Advanced Placement student to go beyond the typical college prep curriculum as well as utilize creative problem solving techniques.  The problems in this assignment emphasize those skills crucial to beginning calculus.  They will include analyzing linear, quadratic, cubic, rational, radical, absolute value, and piecewise functions for information like intercepts, domains and ranges, and symmetry. Graphical transformations are also highly important.

Your APC summer assignment has two main parts which will be collected on the first day of schoolPart I consists of three individual worksheets covering the topics of Linear Equations and Compositions, Factoring and Function Analysis, and Mixed Review Problems.  This part is worth 60% of the total grade.  Part II consists of a Multi-section Graphing Packet reviewing graphical transformations WITHOUT the use of a graphing calculator.  (You may use your calculator to verify your work is correct, but do not rely on the calculator to get your answers!)  This part is worth 40% of the total grade.

I have provided the grading criteria for the assignment in the form of a Scoring Guide.  I suggest you look over the rubric prior to beginning the assignment so that you understand the criteria by which I am assessing your work.  Feel free to ask me to clarify anything about the guide that is unclear to you.  I encourage you to work with your classmates and help each other with material that you might have forgotten.  You can also email me with your questions and I will reply with suggestions as soon as possible.  Use the "Helpful Hints" page (based on the questions I receive) to see if another student might have already asked a similar question, as well.

Scoring Rubric - Grading criteria for the summer assignment
Select Examples for Worksheets 1 and 2 - 10 sample problems
Worksheet I: Linear Equations and Compositions - 20 problems
Worksheet II: Factoring and Function Analysis - 20 problems
Worksheet III:  Mixed Review Problems - 20 problems
Multi-section Graphing Packet - 45 problems
Helpful Hints - See questions other students have asked

These worksheets are all in PDF form which requires Adobe Acrobat Reader, which is free to download and install.  If you have difficulty opening any of the documents or interpreting any of the mathematical symbols contained in them, try downloading and installing  the latest version of the program here:  Adobe Acrobat Reader (PDF)

NOTE:  You can click on the PDF files to open within your browser window (if the Adobe Reader program is compatible with your browser) or you can RIGHT CLICK on the PDF file and do a "Save Link As..." to download and open the worksheets from your computer.
