2. Preview
Romeo & Juliet will begin in a week or so. You may begin reading as soon as you are
ready but I think a much better way to get ready is to watch the movie version,
preferably the new one because we will likely watch the older version in class if we watch it at all.
3. Reader's Workshop
a. Assign the six stories we are doing for our Short
Story/Literary Perspective study: The Lie, Thank You Ma'm,
Marigolds, The Secret Life of Walter Mitty, The Most
Dangerous Game, The Cask of Amontillado, The Scarlet Ibis.
b. Choose at least two to read, though I realize many may
wish to sample more to find one you like and feel you can use for an essay.
c. SSR: read stories & do a reader response at the end
of each you read. Remember, you are only
required to read TWO – and keep it
simple on the response.
d. Maybe read one for HW.

1.
Journal: Which story do you think you'd like to focus on? Why?
Which two literary perspectives do you think you'd like to develop?
Briefly brainstorm & outline each now.

3. Literary
Perspectives Paper Workshop
a. Formally assign paper.
1) You will draft two papers on the
same story, each from a different literary perspective.
2) On Monday, 5/13, you will submit the final copy of one, keeping the
other draft in your portfolio.
3) Get the rubric and read it! Know what you are doing!
4) Coaching:
what Essential Questions of Literary Analysis
(handout) should you be asking. (Answering individual questions as we go.)
b. Begin PW, OL,
& RD of first perspective today.
Keep these to five paragraphs – any more and you will overload yourself.
c. Some of you may still be reading and/or
deciding among stories. That’s fine –
just move to the next step when you are ready.
d. Turn
in reader response journals (at least 2 stories) when ready.
4. Have Character Sketch RRD visually checked
as you read.

Journal: (on separate sheet) Literary Perspectives Paper Self-Assessment: Write
one paragraph describing how you did, what went well and not so well. Then,
write another paragraph asking the teacher and peer readers for specific
comments and advice for your paper. We
may not get to them all so put them in order of importance.
2. Literary
Perspectives Paper Workshop
a. First, staple the Self-Assessment journal to the top of your paper.
b. Exchange essays and do complete critiques of each others'
paper using the writer's requests as your guide. Feel free to comment on
everything though.
c. Try for TWO critiques.
d. Discuss the papers as a class when done.
e. Submit
paper to teacher with Self-Assessment on top and RRD on the bottom – Have RD of
second paper checked as well.
3. Reminders and Announcements:
a. Romeo & Juliet begins
tomorrow. Be sure to have your books
until further notice.
b. Vocabulary is pretty much set for the
rest of the year. Review the words as
you go because I am considering a few SAT style quizzes on the words.
c. There will be a final exam given in
class – now required of all teachers and classes. With that in mind, you may wish to consider
reviewing the various terms we’ve learned throughout the year. And, definitely know the terms we learn in
the Shakespeare unit.
