The two types of Letters of
Respect you will be practicing are a letter
of request for a recommendation and the thank you letter that should always
follow a recommendation. These need not
be terribly complex letters; rather they should be very respectfully written,
precise, and mechanically flawless.
Helpful Hints: Letters of Request 1) Always give two weeks
notice when possible. 2) Make your tone formal
and polite; use mature diction and sentence style. 3) Be thorough in explain
what exactly is needed and be sure to provide all the information the writer
needs to write you a complete recommendation. 4) You may wish to include
your Student Vitae with your request if that information could prove helpful
to the writer. This also saves you
the hassle of including all of that in the body of your request letter. If you do include a copy of the vitae,
indicate in your letter that it is included. 5) The student example
below is of acceptable quality. Thank You Letters 1) Send your thank you
letter immediately upon completion of the recommendation. 2) While you will type
your letter for this assignment, I think a handwritten note in a card is more
appropriate. 3) Make your tone friendly
and polite; use gracious diction. 4) Be concise but as
specific as you can. See the student
sample below for a good look at how to do this. Student Sample – Letter of Request (click) |
