Monday 8/31

1. Journal/Bell-Ringer: Book of Questions #60.
2. Business
    a. Finalize your seats so I can make the seating chart.
    b. Absent/New students make index card, turn in materials, get Portfolio & Writing Process handouts, etc.
    c. Book sale - Wednesday and Thursday in gym all day.
3. Writer's Workshop

   
a. My job for the next two weeks is to give you a little training for ALL your classes.
   
b.  Writing Process review - know terms; they will be quizzed!
    c. Key elements of writing effectively: audience, purpose, focus
    d. Diagnostic Paragraph Writing
       1) Prewrite
            a. Audience: the class/teacher
            b. Purpose: to let us get to know you a bit
            c. Focus:
Favorite thing to do, Favorite sport, Favorite subject in school, etc.
       2) Create OL/RD -
Finish for HW as needed.
4. HW: Finish OL/RD of your "Favorite Paragraph."

Tuesday 9/1

    a. Reminder - Organization Checks begin Friday.

    a. Intro/Review for the
"Perfect Paragraph" - handout with notes.
        *Special emphasis on examples - using SPECIFIC examples!
    b. Unity and Coherence:
Transitions - handout.
    c. Application:
        1) Peer Edit: Use the Perfect Paragraph Rubric to check a partner's Favorite paragraph.
        2) Revise - create RRD and write FC - MLA (2x spacing).
    d. All materials
due tomorrow.
4. HW: PW, OL, RD/RRD, FC of Perfect Paragraph due tomorrow.

Wednesday 9/2

    a. Reminder - Organization Checks begin Friday.
    b. Book sale in gym today and tomorrow.
    c. Double check to see that you made a schedule for your parents.  Check that you changed the message for the 6:30-7:00 time slot.
    d. Checking Open House signatures and signing FLIGHT cards during today's exercise.

Writer's Workshop (Guided Reflection)
    a.
Marking up FC to see how we did.
        1)
3 different colored pencils.
        2) Box in regular pencil around your topic sentence and concluding/clincher sentence.
        3) First color - single underline your 1st Major; double underline the Minor(s) that go with it.
        4) Do the same for Majors 2 and 3, each in a different color.
        5)
In the left margin, put a triangle next to any Minors you have as a dependent clause to its/their Major. Then, put a square next to any Minors that you have standing alone as an independent clause.
        6) 
Circle ALL transitions.  Add a star with each transition that you feel is beyond the obvious.
    b.
Turn in Perfect Paragraph: PW, OL, RD/RRD, FC.
    c. If time, review the four sentence types: Simple, Compound, Complex, Compound-Complex.

        *Includes review of dependent/subordinate clauses and independent clauses.

1. Journal/Bell-Ringer: Describe how to read a textbook and how that is different from reading other types of materials like magazines, novels, etc.

    c. Turn in late Perfect Paragraphs - if needed.

Student Workshop - Reading & Study Skills

    a. Discuss journal.
    b. Review SQ3R with skimming and scanning.

        *These notes can only be had in class; if you are absent, get them from a peer ASAP!

    c. Application Assignment: Perform SQ3R on Ch 10, Sec 3 of your World Studies book.

        1) Target number of questions & answers 10.

        2) Begin now and complete for HW.  I can answer any questions you have as you work.

4. HW: Complete SQ3R for Ch. 10, Sec 3 of WS book.


Friday 9/4  (Slightly shorter schedule for Recognition & Organization Friday)
