Choose one of the following:

1. Write a poem about an idea or emotion - fear, creativity, courage, friendship, etc. - as an extended metaphor, using descriptive qualities to better define the idea being expressed.  Try to maintain a consistent tone.

2. Describe a person or place using a series of detailed metaphors (minimum three).

3. Free write a poem which incorporates a single metaphor throughout the entire poem such as you saw in Mother to Son.

4. Free write a poem which includes three developed metaphors.

Peer Reading and Evaluation Criteria:

Quality of Description: Does the metaphor support the emotions/feelings in the poem? Does the imagery present a clear and vivid picture to the reader? Are the word choices varied and interesting?

 

 

 

 

Appropriate Tone: Does the poem create a consistent and powerful emotional impression?  What is the author's attitude towards his/her topic?

 

 

 

 

Effectiveness of Poem: Is the poem clear and understandable? Is the poem believeable? Is the reader able to relate to the poem? Does the poem make the reader think?
