Monday 2/3

 

1. Journal: 10 minute open write.

2. Writer’s Workshop: Picture Based Short Story

    a. Finish revisions and editing; prepare final copy.

    b. Final copy with RRD due tomorrow – in class readings tomorrow.

3. Reminders:

    a. Parent Info Forms (online is extra credit) due tomorrow.

    b. All portfolio materials should be in class by Friday.

 

Tuesday 2/4

 

1. Journal: Imagine for a moment that you were one of the crew of Columbia.  Write a short (2 paragraph) letter to us that captures what you think he/she would want us to think and feel at this time.

2. Turn in paper Parent Forms if needed.

3. Writer’s Workshop: Picture Based Short Story

    a. Use pictures to create a “cover page” for your short story. (Glue, Paper, Markers, Crayon)

    b. Begin in-class readings.  Those who read today, turn in story: Cover page, FC, RRD.

4. Reminder: All portfolio materials should be in class by Friday.

 

Wednesday 2/5

 

1. Journal: Sheesh, but time does fly.  Can you believe it?  It’s your 10th high school reunion and you run into an old friend from high school – one you haven’t seen in forever.  After all the “How ya’ doins’,” and “Whatcha up to’s,” you finally blurt out, “Hey, you remember that time we . . .”  Finish this little story in at least two paragraphs.

2. Reader’s Roundtable: Picture Based Short Story

    Finish in-class readings.  When done reading, turn in story: Cover page, FC, RRD.

3. Writer’s Workshop: Exploring Personal Stories

    a. Connect to journal in introducing the personal narrative.

    b. Brainstorm some good Personal Stories – a paragraph each for at least four. What we don’t get to in class we can finish tomorrow.

        1) a traumatic experience from when you were little

        2) an amazing triumph

        3) an embarrassing moment (dating, performance…)

        4) an exciting adventure

        5) a humorous anecdote

        6) any event which caused a strong emotion (jealousy, rage, joy…)

        7) a turning point in your life

        8) a moment that made you what you are today

        9) a early or former friend or playmate

       10) a time you felt guilty

4. Reminder: All portfolio materials should be in class by Friday.

 

Thursday 2/6

 

1. Journal: Tell about the last time you really, really laughed.

2. Writer’s Workshop

    a. Review and revisit brainstorming paragraphs

        1) Reread each of your paragraphs from yesterday; for each, write down what you like and don’t like about each.

        2) Have paragraphs checked as you read.

    b. Assign Personal Narrative (w/ overhead or board)

        1) Review scoring guide carefully. (Available online.)
        2) Refer to the site links for Personal Narratives.
        3) Select your focus and begin draft. (DS draft)

            a) Audience

            b) Purpose

        4) Full RD of Personal Narrative due tba.

Friday 2/7

 

1. Journal: First Lines: I get the willies when I see closed doors.

2. Portfolio Set Up (during workshop)

    a. Work on Prewriting Paragraphs.
