Creative
Writing 1/27 – 1/31
Period 9 EXAM
DAY: 9:40 – 11:15 (Period 10: No Class – Exam Schedule)
1. Assign Exam – handout in class.
2. Check any
remaining Poetry Portfolios and Full Portfolios as needed.
3. Return books to
media center if needed.
4. Short stories
and any remaining work I have in my possession will be put into your permanent
portfolio for you by mid-February.
Tuesday 1/28
1. Journal: Why
are you here?
2. Suggest comfortable seating positions – I’ll make the chart soon.
3. Get books, if
available.
4. Materials –
portfolio, paper, writing instruments, book, project stuff (If you’ve heard of
Maitespace, feel free to visit, but I don’t plan to introduce that for a few
days into the semester.)
5. Discuss journal
and perhaps some expectations.
6. Writing is
not easy. It is work. You will work. Your thoughts and ideas deserve it. That said, here’s what I expect in class….
1. Journal: 5
minute free write.
2. Writer’s
Workshop – The Picture Based Short Story
a. In pairs or solo, take four pictures
from our “picture box.”
b. Write a short story (length is
unimportant other than you’ll want to keep it fairly short) using every one of
your four pictures.
c. Prewrite and draft.
d. All stories will be read aloud.
Thursday 1/30
1. Journal: What
if? (Since this is your first “What if”
journal, you might want to just do a huge list of possibilities that you can
use on future “What if” journals.)
2. Writer’s
Workshop – The Picture Based Short Story
a. Brief
review of writing
process – though brief, extremely important.
b. Distribute and review RRD Scoring Rubric.
c. View a super revised draft – that which
we may aspire to (but not all the time!).
d. Continue drafting. When ready, revise. Usually, we would peer read at this point,
but since we are going to read these aloud and get feedback, skip the peer reading
for now and just revise on your own. If
you want, I’ll be your peer reader and give you pointers.
e. Get as far into revision or even
proofreading as possible today. There
is, however, no requirement that this be done as homework.
Friday 1/31
1. Journal: none
2. Student Workshop –
Media Center Computers
b. Fill out student information form
now. Distribute Parent Letter and Assign: Parent Information form due
Tuesday, 2/4. (Automatic 10 points extra credit when your parents’ form is
delivered.)
c. Guided site tour: plans, policies,
grades, scoring guides, help etc. I will
expect that you will read and know the policies.
d. Bit of a scavenger hunt, and free
exploration.
3. Reminders:
a. Have portfolio materials in class next
week.
b. Picture based short stories are not
considered homework. You are certainly
welcome to write whenever you wish but there is no expectation that you use
your weekend for that. (Another policy
of mine: no HW on weekends – you work hard all week; have some fun this
weekend!)
