Creative Writing 1/13 – 1/17

 

Monday 1/13

 

1. Journal: What if? (in poem form)

2. Turn in late Metaphor poems.

3. Poetry Workshop: Odes

    a. An ode:

        1) a lyric with and exalted or enthusiastic tone, usage paying homage to something.

        2) common to find in iambic pentameter (10 syllables per line) and a sophisticated rhyme scheme like abab or abac

        3) written in stanzas

        4) read a couple examples aloud - handout

    b. Write an ode to one of the following in three eight-line stanzas (RRD and FC in poetry portfolio).

        1) to spring

        2) to snow days

        3) to vacation

        4) to anything else you find worthy of praise

 

Tuesday 1/14

 

1. Journal: Write a 10 line poem telling your best friend why you like him/her. (Poetry Portfolio)

2. Poetry Workshop: Catalog Verse

    a. Review Catalog Verse definition and examples – similar to ode.

    b. Draft, peer read, revise, and FC your own Catalog Verse – be sure RRD and FC are in your Poetry Portfolio.

    c. You may also finish your Ode if necessary – make sure its RRD and FC are in your Poetry Portfolio as well.

 

Wednesday 1/15

 

1. Journal: Regular 10 minute open write.

2. Poetry Workshop: Poetry of Shape

    a. Concrete Poetry – handout
    b. Pattern Poetry – handout

    c. Diamantes – handout
    d. Try a couple drafts for each.
        - A FC and RRD of each of these poems should be in your Poetry Portfolio.

 

Thursday 1/16

 

1. Journal: none

2. Poetry Workshop: Form Poetry

    a. Haiku and Tanka – handout
    b. Cinquain – handout

    c. Try a couple drafts for each.

        - A FC and RRD of each of these poems should be in your Poetry Portfolio.

 

Friday 1/17

 

1. Journal: 5 minute free write.

2. Distribute and review Poetry Portfolio Checklist.

3. Poetry Workshop: Playing with Rhyme +
    a. The Limerick – handout

    b. Eye Rhyme – handout

    c. + Acrostics!

    d. Try a couple drafts for each.

        - A FC and RRD of each of these poems should be in your Poetry Portfolio.

4. Be sure to bring your books Tuesday.
