Monday 3/16

1. Journal/Bell Ringer: 1) Define true love; 2) How do you know what an author means?  How could you prove it?  It what ways is a writer and artist?  What are his tools?

2. Business:

    a. Reminder: FCs are due FIVE days after your RD has been commented upon by the teacher.

    b. MPHG Online Journal due by end of week.

    c. Renaissance Study Guides due by end of week - turn in if done.

    d. Grade Sheets.

3. Reader’s Workshop: Renaissance Poetry - Sonnets
    a.
Historical Emphasis for Renaissance
        1) shift more away from social concerns (i.e., The morals & concepts of Chaucer -- though he did do some individualization -- & the values of the Arthurian tales) to the individual.
        2) return to the classics (Greek & Roman): structure in general; the sonnet; the tragedy with plot structure, tragic hero, etc.

    b. The Sonnet - esp. the love sonnet.

        1) Discuss today's journal.

        2) Review basic features of lit analysis   – patterns to look for
            a) Structure & rhyme scheme - for various types of sonnets.
            b) metaphor/conceit
            c) personification
            d) imagery
            e) structure & argument
            f) themes of love and rejection; various tones

4. HW: 1) MPHG Online Writing due by end of week; 2) Renaissance SG due by end of week; 3) CCW FCs due 5 days after teacher comments.

Tuesday 3/17

1. Journal/Bell-Ringer: Review Sonnet 116. Then, summarize your response to it on two levels: 1) What do you think of it/What is your personal response? 2) Make a list of all the techniques you see the author using throughout the poem.

2. Business

    a. Reminder: FCs are due FIVE days after your RD has been commented upon by the teacher.

    b. MPHG Online Journal due by end of week.

    c. Renaissance Study Guides due by end of week - turn in if done.

3. Reader’s Workshop: Renaissance Poetry - Sonnets

    a. Share responses to Sonnet 116.

    b. Sonnet 116 modeled analysis.

    c. Discuss true love as time allows.

4.HW: 1) MPHG Online Writing due by end of week; 2) Renaissance SG due by end of week; 3) CCW FCs due 5 days after teacher comments.

         *At this point, it's going to be after break.

    c. Renaissance Study Guides due by end of week - turn in if done.

3. Reader’s Workshop: Renaissance Poetry - Sonnets

    a. Review 116 analysis again - add metaphor/personification for clarity.

    b. Create thematic statement: True love is an unwavering, intellectual commitment to another.

    c. Emphasize use of language and technique to support the theme.

4. Sonnet Mastery Workshop (overhead)
   
a. Create Groups and Review Assignment

    b. Do a phrase by phrase translation into common language; then, summarize the quatrains and couplet (or other structures if you have another type of sonnet.)
    c. Begin analysis for technique and theme - 
For the analysis, you are looking for literary techniques as described in the assignment.

    d. Finish analysis individually at home if needed.

    e. If done early, begin Day 2 of Project as shown in tomorrow's lesson plan.
