Studies in Poetry & The Poetry Portfolio

Overview

For our study of poetry, we are taking both an academic and a creative approach.  For the former, we will each research a specific type of poetry and present it to the class; for the latter, we will write and creatively present our own original poetry in portfolio form.  As always, mini-lessons and draft work will be graded along the way.

Part I: Poetry Research Presentation

You will master and present a type of poetry to the class.

Part II: The Poetry Portfolio

Create a separate section in your portfolio for all your portfolio materials.  Then, have a basic folder for turning all your poetry materials in when the study is finished – you could even make this fancy if you wanted, but it’s not necessary. Keep this sheet to turn in with your “Poetry Portfolio.”

Your “Poetry Portfolio” will consist of two parts: your notes on the various types of poetry your classmates present and your own original poetry.  The notes simply have to be complete and effective.  The original poetry in portfolio form and its accompanying reflection letter will be graded by the rubric provided below.  Minimum requirements are to be filled in below.

_____ minimum number of lines (at least one > 15 lines; 20 lines may be older poems)

_____ minimum number of types of poetry

_____ recite 15 line minimum, memorized original poem to class
