Monday 8/27

1. Journal: Name a few of your favorite stories and tell why you like each.

2. Reminder: Materials and Website.

2. Writer's Workshop

    a. Review plot curve and parts.

    b. Groups of 4 (one group of 5).

    c. Pass around journal stories from Friday.

    d. The exposition is written - persons 2 and 3 write the rising action & climax.

3. HW: none

Tuesday 8/28

1. Journal: none - we have stories to finish!

2. Writer's Workshop

    a. Person 4 writes the denouement.

    b. Read through final stories and decide on the best one.  Be sure to have specific reasons why you chose the winning story - what makes it good?

    c. Groups begin sharing their best stories followed by why they thought their particular story had the best plot.

    d. As a class, pick best overall story.

    e. So, what makes a great plot - brainstorming and creating a rubric.

Wednesday 8/29

1. Journal: Topic: a weird day at school...

2. Writer's Workshop

    a. Groups begin sharing their best stories followed by why they thought their particular story had the best plot.

    b. As a class, pick best overall story.

    c. So, what makes a great plot - brainstorming and creating a rubric.

    d. Plot as a driving force in writing: Genre Fiction

        1) Definition: fiction written to entertain, using with an engaging plot and usually fitting a certain genre.  Ex. Stephen King - horror; J.R.R. Tolkien - fantasy; Michael Crichton - hard science fiction...

        2) Literary Fiction is the alternative, defined as fiction that is more concerned with being "deep," with great language, style, extensive character development, theme, symbolism, philosophical truths and introspection.  Exs. Steinbeck, Hemingway, Morrison.

     e. For our first story we are going to write a short story of Genre Fiction - our intent is to engage and entertain.

     f. Design and begin brainstorming your story!

3. HW: Complete brainstorming for story; create basic plot outline.

 

Thursday 8/30

    a. Drafting your story.

    b. Share basic plot outline with teacher - ask questions and review ideas.

3. HW: Progress with RD of your story.

 

Friday 8/31

 

1. Journal: For the main character of your story: tell a little vignette from their past that illustrates one of their primary qualities.

2. Writer's Workshop

    a. Drafting your story.

    b. Teacher conferencing.

3. HW: Finish RD of your story.
