Monday 11/2

1. Journal/Bell-Ringer: Simple: tell about your book so far and what you think of it.  Then, list a few questions you have about your book.  Finish by making a list of things that are giving you difficulty with your book so far.
2. Business: Organization Checks resume this week in period 2.

Reader Workshop: Choice Reading
    a.
Habits of the Mind: Metacognition, Questioning, Persistence - using them to become better readers.
    b. Share a few questions you had about your book so students can hear what kinds of questions are coming up.
    c. Share a few difficulties - class suggest ways to deal with them.
    d. Assign: Create (or get) a specific graphic organizer (or other tool) to help you in reading your book.
        1) Suggestions: Tracking Setting, Plot, & Characters, Conflict Lists, Vocabulary List, Historical Context, Literary Techniques, Theme, Close Text
        2) Create and bring to class tomorrow.
        3) You can click on this link -- story organizers -- to get to a pretty good collection of reading analysis organizers quickly.

    a.
Use your graphic organizer or other tool for as much of your book as you've read so far.
    b. Assign: Small Group by book: Create your reading schedule.
        1) Book read by Monday, November 16.
             a) You will receive at least two reading periods in class between now and then.
             b) Make this a DAILY schedule so we can make sure we are in about the same place on any given day.
        2) Turn in schedule when done.
    c. SSR: According to your schedule.

Wednesday 11/4

1. Journal/Bell-Ringer: If you had to analyze your book so far, what would you analyze?  Why?
2. Business
    a) Organization Checks resume this week in period 2.
    b) Book links extra credit in effect!
    c) Receive grades print out and graded work.  Check for make up work.

Reader/Thinker Workshop: Literary Analysis
    a. Meet The Wheel - why we did the analysis activity last week!
    b. It's a thinking skill - not just a reading skill!
    c. Literary Techniques handout - review.
    d. "Marigolds" - General observations about the story - relate to hopes and dreams.
    e. Theme in the story - using literary terms (modeled analysis).
        *Theme: there is a trick to this that makes it easy (usually)!
    f. Creating Theme Wheel for the story.
