        2) Setting: probably an apartment in Prague
        3) 94% speak Czech ,95% Christian
        4) Kafka’s family were German speaking Jews. How might this have shaped his perspective?
    c. Kafka's letter to his father - pass around, read passages, and comment:
        1) What does this tell you about Kafka?
        2) How might it explain the content of his novella?

        *Modernism? Expressionism? Surrealism? Freudism? Existentialism?
    b. Break out into small groups by "ISM"
    c. Report out to whole class what you came up with?
    d. Can we say it's more one than the others?
4. Reader Workshop 2: Tone
    a. Kafka vs. Jane Smiley.
        *Read Smiley and Kafka one after another.
    b. Identify tones and JUSTIFY!

What can you say about Kafka’s themes and stylistic techniques?
    b. Complete SOAPS on your reading: Combine all pieces and write at least three sentences per aspect.
4. HW: Finish up any SOAP and Symbol Writing as needed.
